A geochemical and isotopic perspective on tectonic setting and depositional environment of Precambrian meta-carbonate rocks in collisional orogenic belts

In this contribution we review the possibility of establishing depositional age and tectonic settings metamorphosed carbonate rocks from continental collision zones in East African-Antarctic Orogen. The geochemical characteristics regionally distributed meta-carbonate Highland Complex (HC) Sri Lanka are considered detail compared with similar occurrences Antarctica, India, Madagascar Africa. variations seen imply that deposition was younging west to east, spanning apparent ages Mesoproterozoic Neoproterozoic. case such within Neoproterozoic, whereas southern Mozambique they have a broader range possibly Paleoproterozoic Mesoproterozoic. There is also clear evidence some carbonates were deposited an open ocean surrounding volcanic islands Shale-normalized REE patterns typical signatures passive margin variable input platforms nearby island arcs. comparison Phanerozoic equivalents, absence Ce anomaly most significant, other parameters as (Pr/Yb)SN, (Pr/Tb)SN, (Tb/Yb)SN used evaluate relative enrichments LREE, MREE HREE fractions characteristic ambient seawater. Pronounced La, Y anomalies minor Eu Gd correlations carbon oxygen isotopes, 87Sr/86Sr initial ratios εNd values evaluated for Proterozoic zone. Sr suggest basins western Ocean separated Gondwana West received contributions Archean crust seawater, eastern had specific cratonic continents margins or continental/volcanic arcs active margins.
